Poway Cruisers at the American Heritage Car Show, May 27th, 2017

Once again the club made its annual pilgrimage to Escondido’s Grape Day Park for the American Heritage Car Show. As planned we had 8 cars in our little caravan from the Mercado Shopping Center in Rancho Bernardo to the Park arriving about 7:20 AM.  We were joined at the park by 6 more members bringing our presence to 14 cars and 24 members.

The day started out a little on the cool side, but warmed up to be a very pleasant day. We got parked in the center of the event and setup our bivouac under the eucalyptus. While we really did not need the shade, it made for a very nice gathering place for the club and friends.

It was nice to see that the park has been getting some much needed attention. The grass was in much better shape than last year, and there was very little of the brown dust experienced in the last couple of years. Thank you very much, Escondido!

While attendance appeared to be down somewhat from previous years, the number of outstanding vehicles was very good. And, the food venders where top notch.  The Kiwanis Club served up an excellent pancake & egg breakfast complete with sausage, juice, coffee, tea; and Sausage Masters had the most complete range of special made sausages for lunch I’ve ever seen; and the grill masters served up great Tri-Tip and other beautifully grilled food.  There was even a bear garden on the train station veranda.

Around 2:00 PM the show began closing with the awards ceremony. With attendance down, the number of awards was also cut back, with only 11 vehicles recognized.  Of the 11, 3 were from the Poway Cruisers: Ron & Kathy Shedd’s ’69 Camaro SS RS, Earl Asbury’s ’29 Ford Sedan Delivery, and Frank Jacques ’63 Corvette Split Window Coupe. Congratulations!
